The unlikely worlds of sports fans and statisticians collide in this interesting and accessible collection of previously published articles on the use of statistics to analyze sports, which the editors have thoughtfully culled from a variety of American Statistical Association (ASA) publications. Heavily weighted in the areas of competition (rating players and teams, evaluating strategies for victory), the articles vary in mathematical complexity, but most will be accessible to readers with a general knowledge of statistics. Newly written material from the editors and other notable contributor

Interface problems arise when there are two different materials, such as water and oil, or the same material at different states, such as water and ice. If partial or ordinary differential equations are used to model these applications, the parameters in the governing equations are typically discontinuous across the interface separating the two materials or states, and the source terms are often singular to re?ect source/sink distributions along codimensional interfaces. Because of these irregularities, the solutions to the differential equations are typically nonsmooth or even discontinuous.

Here is a book for anyone who would like to become better acquainted with the modern tools of numerical analysis for several significant computational problems arising in finance. The authors review some important aspects of finance modeling involving partial differential equations and focus on numerical algorithms for the fast and accurate pricing of financial derivatives and for the calibration of parameters. Option pricing has become a technical topic that requires sophisticated numerical methods for robust and fast numerical solutions. This book explores the best numerical algorithms and d

Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving partial differential equations, developed in the late 1990s, have become popular among computational scientists. This book covers both theory and computation as it focuses on three primal DG methods--the symmetric interior penalty Galerkin, incomplete interior penalty Galerkin, and nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin which are variations of interior penalty methods. The author provides the basic tools for analysis and discusses coding issues, including data structure, construction of local matrices, and assembling of the global matrix. Computa

At no other time in human history have the influence and impact of image processing on modern society, science, and technology been so explosive. Image processing has become a critical component in contemporary science and technology and has many important applications. This book develops the mathematical foundation of modern image processing and low-level computer vision, and presents a general framework from the analysis of image structures and patterns to their processing. The core mathematical and computational ingredients of several important image processing tasks are investigated. The b

This book offers a fundamental and practical introduction to the use of computational methods, particularly finite element methods, in the simulation of fluid flows in porous media. It is the first book to cover a wide variety of flows, including single-phase, two-phase, black oil, volatile, compositional, nonisothermal, and chemical compositional flows in both ordinary porous and fractured porous media. In addition, a range of computational methods are used, and benchmark problems of nine comparative solution projects organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers are presented for the first
