During the Middle Ages decorative floor tiles were used in abbey churches, royal palaces, parish churches and the homes of wealthy citizens. Tiles were durable and hygienic and added a new decorative element to the interior. Despite their simple tools and kiln equipment, the medieval tile makers proved extremely skilful in the production of different types of tile. They ranged from variously shaped plain tiles, which were assembled into complex mosaic floors, to two-coloured inlaid tiles, and stamped-relief and line-impressed tiles, all decorated with a wealth of different patterns and designs

Cotton was Britain’s largest industry for more than a century and its principal source of wealth during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. This book tells the story of the cotton industry from its spectacular growth during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to its devasting decline in the twentieth century. Silk was first developed in ancient China as early as 2600 BC and over the centuries to follow it gradually spread first to South East Asia and then to the Middle East, North Africa and Europe along the silk route, becoming established in England in the fourteenth century. No building type arouses more nostalgic affection than the traditional high street cinema, not only because of the impression made by the films on the screen and the havent if offered to courting couples, but also because of its own special atomosphere of expectations, relaxation and escape, usually enhanced by the decorative surroundings. Many picture huses were unremarkable, and some had decline to uncomfortable ’fleapits’ but the cinema inspired architects and designers to create some of the most extravagant and some of the most avant-garde buildings erected in the twentieth cen

British ceramics of the 1950s are highly evocative of a decade of optimism and change in British life. The austerity of war was quickly banished by a new breed of young consumer who had money to spend and who demanded ceramics which were bright, exciting and, above all, modern. This book considers how pottery manufacturers met this challenge, producing ware which is again prized today for its innovative and daring design.
