This compilation contains the records of 16,000 marriages from fifty-one Missouri counties formed before 1840. It is now the chief means of identifying settlers who were in Missouri prior to the first and second censuses of 1830 and 1840. All Missouri counties with marriage records before 1840 are included except St. Louis County and City, which have been adequately covered elsewhere. Most of the marriage records came from the original marriage books on file in the various county courthouses, and these are identified in the "List of Sources" at the beginning of the book. These two works, now reprinted for handy reference in a single volume, index over 40,000 references to surnames contained in the printed registers of English parishes during the years 1601 and 1602. While the two indexes themselves merely list the surname and the parish register(s) where it occurred in 1601 and 1602, and the location of the register at the time of original publication, researchers must realize that these reference are of considerable value inasmuch as the parish records to which they refer are nothing less than early 17th-century registers of baptisms, marriages, and bur

No other official record or group of records is as historically significant as the 1790 census of the United States. The taking of this census marked the inauguration of a process that continues right up to our own day--the enumeration at ten-year intervals of the entire American population. In its very continuity the census is a mirror image of the evolution of the American republic, and the census of 1790, the first official enumeration of all heads of household residing in the infant republic, is the true starting point of this process, the place where we can point a finger and say with con

Working from the original marriage registers, the Gibsons have compiled a list of more than 6,000 Monmouth County marriages arranged alphabetically by the surname of the groom. Each entry also furnishes the name of the bride, the date of the marriage, and occasionally other particulars pertaining to one or both of the parties to the marriage. With an index to brides.

The core of the book consists of the contents of nearly 100 Bibles arranged alphabetically according to the surname of the book’s owner, and, thereunder, in progressions of marriages, births, and deaths. In all, more than 1,000 mostly 18th- and 19th-century inhabitants of Suffolk and Nansemond are here rescued from obscurity and further made accessible in the index to Bible records at the back.

St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church in Knox County, Ohio, is reckoned to be the second oldest Catholic parish in the state. Many of the founding members of St. Luke’s migrated to Ohio from the Catholic parishes of St. Ignatius in Mt. Savage, Maryland, and St. Mary’s of Cumberland, Maryland. The genealogical records of the latter two churches are the basis for Mr. Koch and Mrs. Davidson’s earlier book, Western Maryland Catholics 1819-1951. The compilers now pick up the trail with abstracts from the records of St. Luke’s, which involved translating the original Latin r
