Psychological science is worldwide, but it originated earlier in some countries and regions than in others, and the course of development has differed among countries and regions. Psychology has also interacted with quite different cultural backgrounds in different regions of the world. The special issue of the International Journal of Psychology contains seven papers that treat the origins and development of psychology in most of the regions of the world. It includes countries and regions where psychology has a long history and has attained major status and also developing countries where ps

This special issue includes revised versions of papers presented at the IUPsyS Symposium "Psychology and Cognitive Science", held during the XXVIth International Congress of Psychology in Montreal, August 1996. The introductory article reports the results of an international survey conducted for the IUPsyS on the place and role of psychology in cognitive science; the next three papers are illustrations of interdisciplinary approaches to cognitive issues. Approaches to discourse comprehension by cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, and neurobiology are discussed, and it i

More than half of all everyday memory problems concern the delayed execution of an intended action, e.g. forgetting to give someone a call. This type of memory task has been labelled prospective memory and interest in this rather new field of cognitive psychology is growing. There are at least three reasons why research in prospective remembering is highly relevant. Firstly, prospective memory is of great relevance for everyday life. Secondly, prospective memory is of enormous clinical relevance. Thirdly, prospective memory research is of tremendous theoretical relevance. The six research pap

This special issue of the International Journal of Psychology had its origins in the Quebec 98 Conference on Short-Term Memory, held in Quebec City, Canada, in June 1998. Following this conference, participants were invited to submit contributions based on, and expanding upon, their presentation at this conference. The enthusiastic response made it possible to collect the exciting selection of articles that you will find herein. It must be noted that because of the finite journal space available, the editors and reviewers were faced with the difficult problem of selecting only a limited number

Psychological Dimensions of Global Change is a special issue of the International Journal of Psychology which attempts to bridge some gaps between the natural and social/behavioural sciences. The articles deal with the world-wide changes in the earth’s climate, called the greenhouse effect or global warming. These are at the centre of the multi-disciplinary research programs, which explore the causes and likely effects of these fundamental processes. To a large extent, these changes, as currently described and modelled by earth and meteorological sciences, are a direct or indirect result

This special issue of the European Journal of Cognitive Psychology focuses on spatial congruency effects. The dominant view that has emerged after 50 years of research on this topic is that an automatic route processes task-irrelevant spatial information, while another, controlled, route supports rule-based response activation. However, in line with recent literature, this issue reports studies that show that what has been considered automatic, is in fact subject to various control processes. Consequently, in order to account successfully for congruency effects, dual-route models should be ada
