This book studies the folk-taxonomy for English, and to some extent for the Germanic and Indo-European language families. The semantic fields studied are basic color terms, seasons of the year, geometric shapes, the five senses, the folk-psychology of mind and soul, and basic plant and animal life-forms. Anderson’s emphasis is on folk-taxonomies in Old and Middle English, and also on the implications of semantic analysis for our reading of early english literary texts.

Communication between engineers, their managers, suppliers and customers relies on the existence of a common understanding for the meaning of terms. While this is not normally a problem, it has proved to be a significant roadblock in the EDA industry where terms are created as required by any number of people, multiple terms are coined for the same thing, or even worse, the same term is used for many different things. This taxonomy identifies all of the significant terms used by an industry and provides a structural framework in which those terms can be defined and their relationship to other

How do we group different subjects on a variety of variables? Should we use a classification procedure in which only the concepts are classified (typology), one in which only empirical entities are classified (taxonomy), or a combination of both? Kenneth D Bailey addresses these questions and shows how classification methods can be used to improve research. Beginning with an exploration of the advantages and disadvantages of classification procedures, the book covers topics such as: clustering procedures including agglomerative and divisive methods; the relationship among various classific

Taxonomies are often thought to play a niche role in content-oriented knowledge management projects, as many consider them nice to have but not essential. In this groundbreaking book, Patrick Lambe illustrates how taxonomies play an integral role in helping organizations coordinate and communicate effectively. Through a series of real-world case studies, decision-making frameworks, and example questionnaires, Lambe demonstrates the wide range of ways in which taxonomies help organizations leverage and articulate their knowledge, and offers a clear description of how taxonomies relate to techno
