This comprehensive yet concise introduction to modern German politics emphasizes the structural and attitudinal changes that have taken place over the past half-century in Germany, as well as the policy problems the country faces today. Focusing on the question of whether Germany is becoming the "sick man of Europe," this new edition discusses how many of the current trends and problems--such as labor market reforms, slow economic growth, and rising public deficits--are the result of Germany’s poor adjustment to the demands of globalization.

But to proceed. We are all aware that there is no state[1] in the world in which greater obedience is shown to magistrates, and to the laws themselves, than Sparta. But, for my part, I am disposed to think that Lycurgus could never have attempted to establish this healthy condition,[2] until he had first secured the unanimity of the most powerful members of the state. I infer this for the following reasons.[3] In other states the leaders in rank and influence do not even desire to be thought to fear the magistrates.

This book on Gupta Polity is a companion volume to the author’s eariler work The Mauryan Polity. The sources of information for a study of subject are not as many as in the case of the later book. The author firmly believes that Kalidasa was not a protege of the Gupta Court but lived in second century B.C. and so his prolific works cannot be taken to throw any light on the Gupta empire. One has therefore to depend mainly on the Kamandakiya Nitisastra, the inscripitions and coins of the Gupta rulers and the accounts of the Chinese traveller Fa-hien for a knowledge of the Gupta Polity.
