This book is the first complete theory of the morphology of language. It describes both inflection and lexical word formation, their relation to syntax, phonology, and semantics, and to each other. It enumerates most of the morphological categories of the world’s languages, describing their recombinant abilities, and how they are realized in inflectional and lexical derivations.

This book is a collection of new articles that focus on nominal inflection markers in different languages. The studies are concerned with the morphological inventories of markers, their syntactic distribution, and, importantly, the interaction between the two. As a result, the contributions shed new light on the morphology/syntax interface, and on the role of morpho-syntactic features in mediating between the two components. Issues that feature prominently throughout are inflection class, case, gender, number, animacy, syncretism, iconicity, agreement, the status of paradigms, the nature of mo

Morphology is the study of linguistic forms, more precisely, of the inflected forms and stems of words. Consequently it is that part of grammar whose rules refer to units of at most word level. At the same time, it is also a part of the lexicon to the extent that complex stems are not formed regularly. The handbook informs the reader equally on fundamental concepts and theoretical approaches of the discipline and on morphological structures of diverse languages. Presupposing the current state of the art in morphology its goal is to represent this in a comprehensive fashion at a general level a

Morphology is the study of linguistic forms, or rather, of the inflected forms and stems of words. This handbook informs the reader on fundamental concepts and theoretical approaches of the discipline and on morphological structures of diverse languages. It aims to represent the current state of the art in morphology in a comprehensive fashion at a general level and is illustrated with many examples. Priority is given to a thorough explanation of established concepts and insights, complemented, where necessary, by an unbiased report on alternate problem solutions.

The crosslinguistic studies of the early developmental stages of number, case, and gender in twelve typologically different languages with eight genetic affiliations follow a functional-constructivist approach. Some issues addressed are mean size of paradigms, percentage of base forms, and productivity. One of the main findings is that the typological characteristics of the language acquired influence the process of inflectional development.
