Cleft and Pseudo-Cleft Constructions in English, a corpus-based investigation, is the first study of such constructions to fully explore the view--now widespread among linguists--that any attempt to satisfactorily explain their structural and functional characteristics must refer to concepts directly related to their use in communication. By using a standard written corpus and a standard spoken corpus of British English, the author is able to analyze systematically the discourse-functions of clefts and pseudo-clefts, provide information on the frequency of these constructions in different genr

From Doris Lessing, "one of the most important writers of the past hundred years" (Times of London), comes a brilliant, darkly provocative alternative history of humankinds beginnings. In the last years of his life, a Roman senator embarks on one final epic endeavor, a retelling of the history of human creation. The story he relates is the little-known saga of the Clefts, an ancient community of women with no knowledge of nor need for men. Childbirth was controlled through the cycles of the moon, and only female offspring were born—until the unanticipated event that jeopardized the ha

The second edition of Cleft Lip and Palate: Perspectives In Management is an unparalleled review of treatment concepts in all areas of cleft involvement presented by an international team of experienced clinicians. This text can never be duplicated since it largely consists of longitudinal facial and palatal growth studies of dental casts, photographs, panorexes and cephalographs from birth to adolescence. Throughout all growth and treatment concepts, the need for differential diagnosis in treatment planning has been underscored. The underlying argument is that all of the treatment goals -- go

Traditionally, cleft lip repair has been carried out around 10 to 12 weeks of age. There have been surgeons who have done surgery in the newborn, but there has been no series where cleft lip repair has been carried out in the first 48 hours as a routine procedure over a long period with long term results. The author’s unit has performed this operation routinely since the 1970s, and collected data on the speech, hearing, growth and appearance of the children, who are now in their 20s. The main argument against this procedure was the anaesthetic risk in performing surgery so early in life.
