In the coming decades, the energy sector will face an increasingly complex array of interlocking challenges--technological, economic, environmental, and geopolitical. The energy needs of billions of people in rural and urban areas will have to be met as the world’s population continues to grow and supplies of conventional oil and natural gas further decline. Corporate decisionmakers and policymakers need to know what is likely to happen to energy in the years ahead, as well as where efficiency gains are expected and the role that alternative technologies will play. To examine these issues, an OECD Forum for the Future conference was held in cooperation with the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, bringing together leading players from government, business, and research, to explore the challenges and the likely trends and developments in world energy through 2050. This book presents the results of this international meeting.
