This volume includes selected papers presented at the International Conference on Advances in Physical Metallurgy (ICPM-94). These 72 articles highlight the important concepts of physical metallurgy, including those which have proliferated in various related disciplines such as ceramics, electronic materials, multilayers and intermetallics. The first few sections of the book concentrate on materials in different states of order and the mechanisms involved in the evolution of order. Microstructural changes that occur by diffusional or displactive transformations are also discussed. Aspects of phase stability, including first principles calculations of phase stability are covered. The last three sections are devoted to the application of physical metallurgy principles to the development of specific materials.
