Recalling the Lisbon strategy defining structural reform in the EU, and stressing the need to integrate the acceding countries in the reform process, this book argues that meeting the ambitious challenges set is not impossible. It scrutinizes both reforms already undertaken and those yet to be tackled. The main thrust of the book is that the sharing of mutual experiences is important for generating an acceptable policy mix, both at EU and national levels. The contributors highlight key financial issues, including the role of FDI and of foreign banks in the still ‘under-banked’ acceding

This highly topical book addresses the challenge of economic convergence within Europe, beginning with a thorough review of the theory of growth and related empirical research. Historical and more recent economic developments within the present EU and current accession countries are discussed, along with the design for the process of further integration of accession countries into the EU and the Euro area. Moreover, the potential to achieve a sustainable catch-up process in Western Balkan countries, the Ukraine and Russia is explored, focusing on the task facing the EU in designing proper poli

Quantitative economic policy and econometrics were developed along with macroeconomics in the 1930s. Econometric techniques and models are still being used extensively in the business of forecasting and policy advice. In particular, policy simulations with econometric models have become standard tools for evaluating and designing macroeconomic stabilization policies. For instance, such studies provided important arguments for the popularization of the recent steps towards European integration such as the European Single Market, the European Monetary Union, and the Enlargement of the European U

‘This is the best book I have yet seen on the social and political implications of financial market liberalisation and regulatory change in a globalizing world. The authors systematically analyse the relationships between powerful private sector actors, policymakers and regulators, and other interested groups, identifying crucial neopluralist coalition-building processes leading to complex pro-market forms of reregulation. Each chapter examines these processes at several levels: competing actors and institutions in the financial sector itself; wider political processes and power relationship

Policymakers, academics and private sector analysts have contributed to this volume with their stimulating insights on a broad range of issues, from recent credit booms to the cross-border integration of banking and capital markets. Anyone who wants to understand how finance, growth and

The hydrological cycle of the Arctic Ocean has intimate and complex linkages to global climate: changes in one affect the other, usually with a feedback. The combined effects of large river runoff, advection of meteoric water, low evaporation rates and distillation by freezing contribute to the formation of a strong halocline in the upper Arctic ocean, which limits thermal communication between the sea ice and the warmer waters of Atlantic origin below. Sea ice and freshened surface waters are transported from the marginal seas by winds and currents, ultimately exiting the Arctic Ocean
