This volume evaluates carcinogenicity to humans of 19 chemicals that are carcinogenic to the thyroid follicular-cell epithelium in rodents. These include some so-called ?anti-thyroid? drugs (methimazole, methylthiouracil, propylthiouracil and thiouracil); some sedatives (doxylamine succinate and phenobarbital); and some other drugs including the systemic antifungal antibiotic griseofulvin, the diuretic spironolactone, and the antibacterial sulfa drugs sulfamethazine and sulfamethoxazole. Other chemicals are or have been used in agriculture as pesticides (amitrole, chlordane/heptachlor, hexachl

This monograph presents a series of review studies linking tobacco smoke and involuntary (passive) smoking to several cancers. Evidence of synergy between smoking and several occupational causes of lung cancer (arsenic, asbestos, and radon) and between smoking and alcohol consumption for cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and oesophagus and between smoking and human papillomavirus infection for cancer of the cervix have been found. In addition, the working group concluded that involuntary smoking (exposure to secondhand or environmental tobacco smoke) is carcinogenic to humans.

This eighty-ninth volume of the IARC Monographs is the third and last of a series on tobacco-related agents. Volume 83 reported on the carcinogenicity of tobacco smoke and involuntary smoking (second-hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke) (IARC, 2004a). Volume 85 summarized the evidence on the carcinogenic risk of chewing betel quid with and without tobacco (IARC, 2004b). That volume explored the variety of products chewed in South Asia and other parts of the word that contain areca nut in combination with other ingredients, often including tobacco. In this eighty-ninth volume, the carcino

Breast cancer is the leading site of new cancer cases in women. Breast cancer detection is currently primarily based on physical examination by health care professionals, chance findings by women, breast self-examination and mammography used for diagnosis or for routine screening. Early enough detection through mass screening with mammography has been introduced in many countries in the hope that early intervention would lead to reduced mortality and less aggressive treatment. The aim of this publication is to provide an independent, authoritative review of the evidence of the efficacy and

This ninetieth volume of the IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans considers human papillomaviruses (HPVs), which were evaluated by a previous Working Group (IARC, 1995). The monograph in the present volume incorporates new data that have become available during the past decade. HPVs represent the most common infectious agents that are transmitted sexually throughout the world; the major risk factors are behaviours associated with sexual activity. Although most infections are asymptomatic and are cleared within a period of 2 years, genital HPV infection can lead
