One seldom-raised yet not merely curious question of Evolution is, why the process should be an evolution at all? If Evolution is simply a method of Creation, why was this very extraordinary method chosen? Creation tout d’un coup might have produced the same result; an instantaneous act or an age-long process would both have given us the world as it is? The answer of modern natural theology has been that the evolutionary method is the infinitely nobler scheme. A spectacular act, it is said, savours of the magician. As a mere exhibition of power it appeals to the lower nature; but a proce

More than a century after the author delivered his meditation on the 13th chapter of I Corinthians, the need for genuine Christian love remains as great as ever. Drummond writes, "To love abundantly is to live abundantly, and to love forever is to live forever". In this analysis of the love chapter, he highlights the basic truth that God is love; therefore, "everything that loves is born of God".

1894. In these pages an attempt is made to tell in a plain way a few of the things which science is now seeing with regard to the ascent of man. What science has to say about himself is of transcendent interest to man, and the practical bearings of this theme are coming to be more vital than any on the field of knowledge. The thread which binds the facts is, it is true, but a hypothesis. As the theory, nevertheless, with which at present all scientific work is being done, it is assumed in every page found in this book.

Originally published in 1904, The Ascent of Man sought to correct what Drummond felt was an oversight in the evolutionary biology research being done in his day. Most scientists, he says, accept without question that the struggle for life is the force of evolution. What they overlook is what he calls the struggle for the life of others, or the struggle for reproduction. Drummond combines his own theories with a heavy dose of Christian doctrine to arrive at what may best be called "theological biology," which assumes man to be the greatest, highest purpose of the universe.
