This volume completes the account of physical methods used in biochemistry that was covered in Volume 11A, which was published in 1985. It deals with fast reaction methods, high performance liquid chromatography of peptides and proteins, fluorescence spectroscopy, neutron and X-ray scattering techniques, and also Raman and resonance spectroscopy which have in recent years been used to an increasing extent in biochemistry. This addition to the invaluable series New Comprehensive Biochemistry will be of interest to all those working in the fields of biochemistry and biophysics.

"Few living persons have served the Metropolitan Museum of Art–indeed, the entire world of art and art museums–longer, or with more distinction, than Roy Neuberger. A man of taste, passion, persistence, and generosity, he has shared much of his great private collection with the public, and for generations has supported activities that bring people to museums, and motivate them to return again and again. Now, this giant of a man has recorded eighty years of his life–and the result is entertaining, illuminating, and, like the tireless gentleman himself, inspiring." –Philippe de Mont

A Sobolev gradient of a real-valued functional on a Hilbert space is a gradient of that functional taken relative to an underlying Sobolev norm. This book shows how descent methods using such gradients allow a unified treatment of a wide variety of problems in differential equations. For discrete versions of partial differential equations, corresponding Sobolev gradients are seen to be vastly more efficient than ordinary gradients. In fact, descent methods with these gradients generally scale linearly with the number of grid points, in sharp contrast with the use of ordinary gradients. Aside f

The development of molecular biological techniques and their application in the field has given a new dimension to the area of membrane transport. The combination of biochemical (site-specific reagents), molecular biological (site-directed mutagenesis) and genetic approaches of which this volume gives numerous examples in combination with biophysical techniques as X-ray analysis and NMR will eventually lead to a complete elucidation of the mechanism of action of these transport proteins. Although impossible to give a comprehensive overview of this rapidly expanding field, the expert contributo

Our understanding of the molecular genetics of immunoglobulins has been enormously advanced by the application of recombinant DNA technology. This new volume in the popular series New Comprehensive Biochemistry contains eight chapters that draw together reviews summarising the research into immunoglobulins and the arrangement, rearrangement and expression of their gene structure. Molecular Genetics of Immunoglobulin will be of particular importance to those working in the areas of genetics and molecular biology, immunology, and cell biology.

Europe and the Making of Modernity, 1815-1914 is a clear and engaging chronicle of the political, economic, social, and cultural changes that transformed Europe during the nineteenth century. An introduction neatly summarizes the major issues and events of the French Revolution, while a sweeping narrative takes readers from the Congress of Vienna to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo. Employing the latest research, the book incorporates discussions of gender, nationalism, imperialism, the rise of the new working and middle classes, and the ways in which artists represent
